Bygones

Yesterday , Mr S and I took a little trip into the past....

'Bygones'

Situated in St Marychurch, Torquay, Bygones is a most delightful museum.

You are transported back in time...to the Victorian era... and more...

where you can savour the flavours of the day.

The Victorian street is a wonderful scene indeed.

Oh why did shops in those days seem so much more interesting?!

These fabulous railway posters caught my eye...

And also the 40s/50s exhibits.

Bygones itself has a fascinating history:

It's a wonderful resource for children as well as adults.

If you visit South Devon and love to delve into the past,

Bygones is a must!

  1. Looks like a fascinating place, and what an interesting story how it came into being. Would love to have been there to see the train winched into place! If I ever get to Torquay, I know where I'll be heading...

  2. How lucky you are to be near enough to visit places like this out of season. It looks wonderful.

I wonder what the folk back then would think of our shops today? xx

  6. I'd enjoy a browse around there! It looks very similar to Beck Isle Museum in Pickering which is well worth a visit too.

  7. What a fabulous place. I have a photo of my Grandparents in their grocers' shop, just before the war - I must put it in a post!

  8. I love Bygones (had a feature on this in BBC History Mag a couple of years or so ago) and love all the nostalgia memorabilia! Have been a couple of times in the past, must go again ... thank you for reminding us of this lovely place (when I was a girl this was my local cinema, The Tudor! It was only a couple of hundred yards from where I lived. So strange to go in there now to see a steam engine and Victoriana!)

  10. Alfie loved Bygones but Lizzy is still traumatised by some of the exhibits and regularly says 'I don't want to go to Bygones again'. Some bits were a bit scary for small sensitive children ;-)

  12. My three kids always loved going round these kind of museums - though one of them was always a bit wary of the figures/manequins dotted around the place! This one looks a great place to visit.
