Celebrating Autumn!πŸπŸ‚πŸπŸ‚πŸπŸ‚

Not everyone likes the autumn, because, for them, it is a reminder of a long, dreary, tired old drudge towards the winter…a winter that brings chilly, even icy, mornings, darkness at 4pm and things of that sort! And so they cling on to the last remnants of summer for as long as they can, and forgetting those very important words, (said to me many years ago by Nich) … ‘ Look forward, not back!’

Whilst they might be using up their energy, mourning the loss of summer, I think they are missing out on so much! Because, for me, autumn is the most beautiful season, a season when nature serves up the most wonderful sights (those glorious reds, oranges, yellows and browns of the leaves and the bright red berries) and those unique smells (the wood smoke, for starters!) It really is nature at its very best!

For instance, take these fungi:

Recently, my daughter, Helen and her family spent some time in the nearby woods, which always has an abundance of fungi at this time of the year. Helen is fascinated by these; she sent me these photos and has very kindly allowed me to use them on my blog.

What an incredible array of fungi! And what a fascinating subject!

This is nature, just getting on and doing its thing so splendidly, so spectacularly and yet so silently !

Autumn is so very inspiring. And if you think about it, the famous artists celebrated the season of autumn in their own, unique styles!

Vincent did it:

Pierre Auguste did it:

Claude did it!

Yes, we are talking about Van Gogh, Renoir and Monet, just in case you didn’t know…but I guess that you did know!

These artists must have had a ‘field day’ when they were considering the subject of autumn. And to be fair they aren’t the only ‘artists’ to have given us their interpretations of this special season. Many more did it…many poets...and not forgetting many musicians…and a host of other creative people to boot.

One of my favourite, Autumn posters is this London Transport poster by Nari Madon, entitled  ‘Autumn Leaves’, designed in 1964:

In fact, there are many old London Transport posters that celebrate this fine season.

And finally, as we greet October, I think it’s only fit and proper to end this blog post with a poem:

October's Party

By: George Cooper

October gave a party;

The leaves by hundreds came—

The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples,

And leaves of every name.

The Sunshine spread a carpet,

And everything was grand,

Miss Weather led the dancing,

Professor Wind the band.

The Chestnuts came in yellow,

The Oaks in crimson dressed;

The lovely Misses Maple

In scarlet looked their best;

All balanced to their partners,

And gaily fluttered by;

The sight was like a rainbow

New fallen from the sky.

Then, in the rustic hollow,

At hide-and-seek they played,

The party closed at sundown,

And everybody stayed.

Professor Wind played louder;

They flew along the ground;

And then the party ended

In jolly "hands around.

And so…I hope that you enjoy this autumn and all that it offers!

  2. Beautiful! Every season has something special to offer, but the 'season of mists and mellow fruitfulness' is spectacular.

  3. I had the first verse of that poem by George Cooper on my 1st Oct post but didn't know there was more of it - so thank you for sharing , and those amazing fungi photos. We never have so many here - it's always too dry.
