Days out…a jolly jaunt…South Hams style!

Today we’ve been navigating the Devon lanes and thank goodness I have a husband who can do that properly! They can be quite scary in places, especially when you meet someone who isn’t used to driving in the lanes!

And so, we found ourselves here:

This is Shilstone House and gardens, and it’s set in 500 acres of lovely, Devon countryside. The whole place has been restored since the 1990s and the history is fascinating! You can read all about it here . The owners have worked wonders!

The cafe is in the courtyard, with both indoor and outdoor seating, and we were greeted and seated by a lovely, friendly lady; we sat inside and enjoyed coffee and a cake.

Unfortunately, the grounds weren’t open to the public, today, as they had a private event. However, this is from their website, just to give you an idea

It’s certainly well worth a visit if you are in the area…and don’t mind driving  the Devon lanes!

Here is the main website.

That done, it was back to the lanes and we made our way to Avon Mill Garden Centre…where I bought nothing…but it was good to browse!

I’m looking for a couple of late, summer flowering plants, such as Helenium, Rudbeckia or Coreopsis. But the plants on offer were too big, in this instance.

Meanwhile, back at home, and in our own garden, these Japanese Anemones are now popping up:
