Urban and Rural Plants, near Exeter, is a trade nursery that is also open to the public. Its speciality is architectural plants and they sell a huge variety of these, which include: Palms, Olive trees, Acers, Birch,Beech,Yew, Bay, Laurels, Bamboos, Climbers such as Jasmine and Bougainvillea, Tree Ferns, Magnolias, Camellias, Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Citrus, Succulents, Grasses...and more!
And it is here that I found myself today after Nich had picked me up and said ‘ I have a surprise trip for you!’
We had a lovely stroll around but as our respective gardens are fairly full, we didn’t part with any money, preferring to admire to what was being grown there.
We drove on to Powderham, where Urban and Rural Plants also have a plant centre…and we know this delightful place really well!
Obviously we had coffee in the cafe here and then a mooch at their smaller plants.
We took advantage of some offers! I came home with two, Thyme plants for my raised bed, where I’m trying to grow mainly herbs, plus a Nepeta and an Echinacea; Nich bought three Echinacea and a Salvia, that William chose!
It was an incredibly hot morning…hence an ice cream for William!
Back at their house, it was even too hot to stay in the garden for very long. However, since my last visit, these gorgeous poppies have bloomed. Nich grew these from seed and they are called ‘ American Legion’.

These are stunning blooms with lovely, white centres. And they look perfect with the vivid, blue Cornflowers.
This week, I managed to save some seeds from my yellow, Welsh Poppies and so we’ve agreed to swap seeds, when these are ready! I have also collected Cowslip seeds and I’m waiting for my white Honesty to dry . I’ve already sown the purple variety of Honesty, some Forget me nots, loads of Foxgloves, Betony and a further batch of a perennial wild flower mixture. I’m already thinking ahead to next year and I sat down with my lovely planner, yesterday…
Finally, on Tuesday we didn’t have our usual meet up with my sister and her husband as they were busy with other things and so Mr Snippets said, ‘ Where would you like to go?’ Off we went to Endsleigh Garden Centre, which is near Ivybridge and then we drove on to Avon Mill, near Loddiswell, as we’d had to abandon that trip the other day due to a road closure.
This is Rosa ‘Chic’ and it was too beautiful to leave behind!
And now it’s time to think about tomorrow and ‘Spider Art!’ 🕷️😱
The poppies are gorgeous and so is the rose. We have yet to sort out our herb planters; they need to be dug out, split and replanted, but I think it's going to be too hot. The oregano is flowering madly, though.
