This week’s garden snippets…

I didn’t plant many Tulips in the autumn but I did pop some into two containers and they have been rather lovely in spite of being slightly bashed by recent rain.

I have them growing alongside some Geum, which has just come into bloom..a lovely splash of colour.

Meanwhile, strange things have been happening in and amongst my Ragged Robin!

Somehow…and I know not how… when I sowed the Ragged Robin seeds, last year, some Forget-Me -Not seeds must’ve got into two pots. I find it quite strange as it’s happened twice…but the Forget - me - Nots are pink in one plant…and blue in the other!

The Ragged Robin has just started to flower as has the pink Campion, which I also grew from seed. I think I find the wild flower seeds the easiest to grow!

The pond is looking good and the Frogbit has really made itself at home! I love Frogbit and I think that all ponds should have it! The mini ‘water lily’ leaves are lovely.

But if you are considering acquiring Frogbit for your pond then make sure that you buy the native ‘Hydrocharis Morsus-Ranae’, not the Amazon Frogbit,  as they are quite different!

Frogbit offers shelter to tadpoles and dragonfly larvae. It’s a wonderful, free floating plant that retreats, in the winter, to the bottom of the pond and it overwinters as a tiny bud called a Turion. In the spring it floats to the surface as a plant, and as the season goes on it multiplies. It doesn’t take long as when we had Frogbit in our previous pond, it very soon spread!

On Friday, we had a trip to Powderham. The plant centre is one of the best. Owned by Urban and Rural plants they offer so much variety and the plants are really good value.

A white Azalea caught my eye as did the white Aquilegia…

Also on offer was a splendid collection of Acers…

…along with a variety of ferns and geraniums.

And not forgetting Fuchsias, which seem to be back in fashion.

It was all very lovely!

Finally…

You might think that I’m slightly bonkers showing this photo, below! But…on Sunday morning. I had one of those WOW moments! After spending a number of weeks in the fridge before being moved to the greenhouse ( that is the pot, not me!) , at last I can spot something happening! These are the famous Blue Poppy seedlings…so difficult to grow!

I figured that if they can grow them at Plant World, which is only a couple of minutes away from where I live, then surely I should be able to grow them! Fingers crossed that they survive! Watch this space!
This is what I am aiming for…!

  2. I might try some frogbit in my container pond, but I expect I'd have to keep it in check.
    Those poppies are stunning! X

  4. Your Tulip is such a pretty colour and shape and looks lovely next to the Geum. My Geums are starting to bloom now too. I have a pale lemon one as well as an orange variety. How exciting with the Blue Poppy seedlings. I do hope they grow into beautiful plants for you. Thanks for the tip about the Frogbit, I will be sure to check when I buy some for our pond.
