Mothering Sunday / Mother’s Day !

It’s very soon that time of the year when flower shops are rushed off their feet and card suppliers are rubbing their hands with glee!

Mothering Sunday or Mother’s Day, whichever you prefer to call it, has become so commercialised since I was young but nevertheless it’s a lovely day to say a ‘thank you’ to one’s mum as well as remember her if she’s no longer here.

I’ve always wanted to do something with these fabric panels, which were designed by Debbie Mumm, way back in the late 1990s/ early 2000s. And so I set to work on creating five cards for the said occasion!

I’ve always loved these panels as they are fun, full of character …and they make me laugh!

On the subject of Mothering Sunday, I gave this book to my mum some years ago and it’s been sitting on my shelf for quite some time. I’ve never read it and so this is my reading for this week…

Apparently, it’s all about seventy year old, widowed Anna Caldwell, who  likes to be alone and is happy to potter around her garden chatting to her friend Miss Poe. However, the bliss of Anna’s peaceful lifestyle causes her five children much dismay.

Jane, the eldest and most organised, gathers her siblings together to visit Anna on Mothering Sunday. Henry the politician, Margaret the doctor and the youngest, Felicity, all agree to attend with their partners . . . but that leaves Tony, the shadow on the family’s respectable past.

Carnegie Medal winning author Noel Streatfeild pieces together a startling image of the post-war British family in her novel Mothering Sunday.

I’m looking forward to delving into this!

Meanwhile, whilst  having coffee, last week, with an old friend, who is an avid reader, I mentioned the book below. I’m a great fan of Persephone books and this one is a hoot and well worth a read. I’m going to read it again before passing it to her to borrow. She won’t be disappointed!

Miss Buncle’s book by D.E. Stevenson can be found

  1. The panels are wonderful. I wish I could look so cheerful completing domestic tasks!
