In times when we really need our pollinators to thrive, my local council, in its wisdom, has decided to cut the verges, which were full of dandelions, daisies, other flowers and insects of all sorts.
But, on further investigation, this same council is promoting…YES PROMOTING…’Wild about Devon Grants’!
Can you believe that?!
Clearly, Newton Abbot Town Council isn’t ‘Wild about Devon’ because if it was, it would not have mown the verges on our estate, as well as other estates in the area. In doing so, it has ripped the dandelions, the daisies etc etc from the verges, depriving the pollinators of their precious food.
As my son, who drew my attention to this today as he went for his early morning walk, said:
“We live in one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world, why are you contributing to this problem instead of trying to reverse this trend? It's time to get your heads into the 21st century, I don't want to have to explain to my little boy that there's no nature anymore, just because people wanted to look at short grass.’
It’s up to us to make protest as who else will stand up for wildlife?
I’m so disgusted at the hypocrisy and double standards and I think that Newton Abbot Town Council should hang its head in shame!
