It all began just over a year ago when we were sitting contemplating what to do with a very old and woody heather bed..long past its sell by date.
Well, in no time at all, and once a decision had been made, the heather bed was no more! In typical Hally style, (i.e. a one man destruction unit) we were quickly on to stage 2!
And the digging began...all by hand...no fancy machines!
A few overhanging branches had to be dealt with...
And it all began to take shape...
It now looked like a very important archaeological dig...
All was going along very nicely...this was the spring of 2019...
And even the flowers seemed to cheerfully accept that they
would be getting a new neighbour.
The digging then became harder as the ground became heavier and full of roots.
Nevertheless, one (but not me!) soldiered on..
We soon started to collect rocks...all sourced locally...because at the same
time that we were creating, other people were getting rid...
The shelves could now clearly be seen..the plan was taking shape.
But by golly, it was hard work..(but not for me!)
Mind you, being tea lady is a very important job
and I slipped into the role quite easily.
By now, even the tools were tired
Of course, when you dig a big hole, you have to put the soil somewhere else!
Hence, a new bank was formed.
Very soon, we could ‘see the wood for the trees’, so to speak...
And then things came to a halt..in the form of illness, bad weather..
and having no liner in place wasn’t helpful.
And the pond filled, emptied, refilled, emptied ...so many times
in that ridiculous winter of 2019/2020.
Mud bath anyone?
We were so glad to welcome April 2020, which bounded in full of fine weather!
And the pond making ‘cogs’ were very quickly working again!
Down went the underliner...
And this was quickly followed by the liner...
And in no time at all, the pond was back on track
And we sat by the pond looking at the reflection in the water as it filled the pond helping to ease the liner into its permanent place...
And boy..now are we cooking! (As they say!)
Rocks have been manoeuvred into position...not forgetting half a ton of pebbles.
We have a beach...
And the perfect place to sit when we meet for a drink...
And in his spare time, he has made a net to take off any excess
leaves. There will be no fish in this pond
as this is a wildlife pond with no fish and no fountain.
The pond plants are on order and
I’ve already been categorising them...
1. Deep water
2. Lower shelf life
3. Marginals
4 Chuck em in! 🤣😂🤣
Check back soon!
😁
A very good looking pond, well done to the youngster that put in all the hard work to achieve a great spot to sit and ponder the next project.
