Family matters ;-)

My dear dad has Alzheimer's.
He's had this for some time and probably for longer than we all realise.
However, since Christmas, his condition seemed to worsen a little
and, last week, it was decided that he would spend two weeks in a nearby care home.
This not only gives the Dr a chance to assess him further but also gives
my lovely mum some badly needed respite.
And so, after some protest and a rather stressful couple of hours
yesterday morning, my dad finally went off for his 'little holiday'.
We tried to explain this to him as best we could.
But of course, anyone who has dealt with someone who has this
condition, will know full well that no sooner do you finish
explaining, then they have forgotten ...
and you have to start all over again!
Gold stars all round for patience!

We all realise that this must have been quite an ordeal for him.
And also for my mum.
But with being woken anything up to six times a night
my mum was becoming exhausted!

So, I just wanted to say that during the next couple of weeks,
I will not be around very much in blog world !

Take care everyone ;-)

  2. Ah, that explains it........ when I saw your little picture in my sidebar I was thinking I haven't seen much of you recently. I am sure all of this is for the best in terms of giving your mum a rest and your dad the opportunity for a "little holiday". Take care of yourself too Sal! x

  3. How distressing for you all, but I hope the visit gives your mum some respite and the doctors are able to carry out their assessment. Locally we have a support group for Alzheimers relatives and carers. If you haven't already done so, it may be worth trying to find one in your area, as being in touch with people in a similar situation can sometimes be a help.

  5. Hi Sal,
I feel for you all, I really do. As you're aware, I know exactly what you're going through. My nan is in hospital still and deteriorating but the family have finally realised that she will have to go into a home. It's so sad really, she and my grandad have been married over 70 years and rarely been apart. Nan also gets up and wanders constantly in the night and has fallen several times now. It's an awful illness. Thinking of you...

  14. Tell your mum to take care, get a much needed rest. I used to work in a care home, it was a lovely place and I've got happy memories. Theres always negative press but never the positive side. I hope it works out for you all.

  15. Sal - my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I too have elderly parents and am starting to deal with dementia with my Dad. It is hard to believe how much it takes to ensure your parents are safe and comfortable as they move through their twilight years. But it is worth it because of all they gave us as we grew up. Does not, though, negate the fact that for some of us there are greater challenges. Please be sure to take time to take care of yourself as you go through this with your Mum. We will all still be here when you are ready to come back...

  27. Hi Sal, popped over to wish you a very happy new year and am very sad to read about your father having Alzhiemers. As you know two of my grandparents also had Alzheimers and as a family we fundraise for the Alzheimers society who support families affected by this condition and who also fund research. thinking of you and your family and sending love and prayers.
