I'm just popping out for a Turkey...back soon....ish!!

January... and things are slowly getting back to normal!

Just think...women all over the country have been doing this !! ;-)
The big clean up after Christmas!
Me included...and then I did some of this...
...which I far prefer!

Something nice 'n simple!
Let's raid the cupboard for jam!
I don't know about you but I nearly always break my wrists trying to undo new jars! Grrrr!

I told you it was simple baking!

(I don't really need a recipe for pastry, in case you are wondering!! )
I just wanted to re-enact this scene...;-)

There's nothing like good old plain and simple food after Christmas
The first beans on toast, for instance!
And someone in the house mentioned jam tarts a day or two ago...so jam tarts they will be getting!

And who says that January is dull..?
I like getting back to normal! It suits me.
Over Christmas, half the time I have not known which day of the week it is!
And did you read about this poor lady :
''Wife who went out to buy Christmas turkey 15 days ago still stranded by snow! ''
Anyway..must dash...housework calls!
;-)

  1. The hyacinth is beautiful and a lovely color too. Very spring feeling.

I have the same problem opening those jars. I'm not sure what I'm going to do when I'm really old. More then likely have the store people open the jars for me there. : )
Happy first full week of the new year.

  2. I love making Jam Tarts just after Christmas too. We've got something very simple for dinner night too - Egg & Chips! Can't wait for my Hyacinths to grow - I bought them a week before Christmas and put them in the shed so they wouldn't flower too quickly and promptly forgot them, bought them in last week so late flowering Hyacinths!
Yes.......that poor woman, did she eat her shopping or has the poor love lived on just Turkey for three weeks? I wonder if we will ever get to know............

  3. Still stranded? At least presumably the turkey still be frozen.
Yes - cleaning up after Christmas - I hate it. As for tarts - the farmer adores them - I rarely make them and your photograph made me feel very guilty. Happy New Year

  4. You need a gadget to open the jars. It's like a metal grip on a long metal handle. It works because you have more leverage. Other than that, wear rubber gloves and try.
Baking is SO more fun than clearing up, isn't it? I usually find pine needles well into May, but I have a new food mixer I'm waiting to try. Yay!
Like your store cupboard very much. xx

  5. You need one of these for your jars:)

or a rubber washing up glove will do the trick!

Love your hyacinths - mine are just emerging now - I'm looking forward to seeing what colour they will be:)

  6. I have tried a gripper thing for jars, but these are only any use if you have strong wrists, as you need to hold a jar tightly in order to use the darned thingy! So, I'm afraid I pour some hot water on the lid (not boiling, of course, I'm not stoopid!) and that is enough to make the jar lid easy to turn.
    LOVE JAM TARTS!

  8. I read about the lady who got stuck when out shopping and didn't get home for Christmas - sad but kind of funny too.

Been baking here today - jam tarts - wanted to use up all the ends of jars of jam we've ended up with.

  10. More baking here, too. Carrot cake which came out better than the sponge I made yesterdy with the wrong flour and the children refer to as 'the biscuit cake'.

  11. Very funny, Sal - is it a true story? Where is she stranded?
I love your picture story walking us through the baking process. Not to mention my great admiration for that pretty cupboard of yours! And jam tarts? Fabulous! Now you really are the Queen of Hearts....
    Happy days,

  15. Happy New Year Sal! x
The Queen of Hearts...she made those tarts! ...they look yummy too!
As for the lady who went out to buy her turkey...the thought struck me that maybe for once she didn't fancy being the chief cook and bottle washer this year and fancied lording it up in a cosy hotel somewhere in the peace and quiet!? ...pretty good thinking I reckon, hahaha!!!
    Started de-cluttering today myself!
    Lots of love

  16. Those tarts look yummy :) My living room looks so bare with out the tree, it was only up 2 weeks, funny how we get use to things. My spring bulbs haven't flowered yet but yours look lovely. x

  17. Hello Sal !
"miam, miam" ("yummi", I think in English) the tarts seem to be delicious ...
Yes, the cleaning after Christmas ... I don't do it, lol. I decorate the house for Xmas and my lovely husband do the cleaning after Xmas ...
In France, the second Sunday after Christmas we celebrate "Epiphanie" So, this day we eat (again "eat") a "Galette des Rois"( like a Twelfth Night cake I think ???)It's a flat puff pastry cake with almond cream inside and a lucky charm.
    Bonne journée !

  18. That is so true Sal - jam tarts, beans on toast are certainly a refreshing change after all the heaviness after Christmas. Spring bulbs are by far my favourite over any flowers.

  19. Have you ever tried catching hold of the bottom of the jar and banging the side of the lid on the table all the way around the edge of the jar? I know it sounds daft but it really works! We have another contraption from Brabantia that works quite well but tends to mark the lids. It has various sized metal circles with gripping teeth on, hinged with handles. My husband calls it "The Circumsizer"!
