The Winter Solstice...some fun..and a day alone!

Well it's the shortest day today... and here we are in a cold Devon...but with no snow!
Apparently, the Winter Solstice happens at 17.47 today, when the North Pole is 23.5 degrees away from the sun.
We don't get much snow in South Devon....but here's a fave photo of my two nephews (and their friend) in their garden in Devon. I would guess in about the year 1986!
This pic has always made me laugh!

If you have any idea about what they might be saying to each other ...do comment!

Meanwhile I got out this, earlier..

It's the only thing which I possess from Fortnum and Mason and I love it!

Oh for one of those hampers!

All the men of the house are away for the day and so I am left to do my own thing..

A little bit of this...

And then tonight, a certain someone will be in my study to hand out small gifts to my pupils!

What a lovely day!

;-)

  1. I dont feel quite so bad now that you've told me there's no snow in Devon! Oh well, maybe we'll get some on Christmas Day! I love the snowman photo and how nice to have the house to yourself for the day! Hope you enjoy yourself!
Have a wonderful Christmas and a very happy New Year.

  3. Back in the 70s I worked just behind F&M. My then boss used to send their hampers as Christmas presents - sadly not to his staff. As I helped him order, I used to think that actually there wasn't a lot in the hamper I would choose to eat. Most of it was too posh and rich for the likes of me! They did however sell the most delicious Black Forest Gateau I have EVER tasted

  4. You sound to be enjoying yourself - hope the day all went as planned and that you had a lovely time. You are welcome to as much of our snow as you can take.

  5. You are welcome to some of our snow - we don't often get this much in Suffolk these days and I have to say its beginning to out stay its welcome!

  6. Lucky pupils! I love the photo too. I think the little one on the right is saying 'it was me, I put it on the snowman's head'!

  7. Hello. We have lots of ice in Honiton (fell on my bum this morning, ow!). I think they are saying "we made this snowman 'just like that'!" a la Tommy Cooper. Merry Midwinter!

  8. I once was sent a F&M hamper, just a small one (but that was a treat, even a small one!) and now that hamper is used on my desk for all those bits and pieces which have no real 'home'! I love it!

we had a little snow during two days but now all has melted (?)
Your pupils are spoiled children, you're a generous woman.
We spend Xmas with the grandsparents at St Malo so
I wish you now a Merry Christmas with your family. I'm busy to pack all the suitcases (and presents for everyone ...)
    Merry Christmas to all !!!

  16. Sounds perfect Sal... though a little sprinkling of snow would be the icing on the cake.
We have had our white Christmas but sadly it is thawing out rapidly..so pretty while it lasted but lethal on these hills..
I think your nephews were saying.."Just like that".. in true Tommy Cooper style seeing as the snowman is looking like a deadringer for Mr Cooper.
