What a load of old cobbles!

Well, what can I say?!
I thought that staggering up that cobbled hill in Lincoln, a couple of years ago, was bad enough but that's nothing compared to what we did earlier today!

When dear DH said he was doing a flying visit to Bideford , I said 'Ah right, well I'll come too and let's have a day out!'
;-)

I actually had nowhere in mind but we ended up in... Clovelly!

If you can ignore all the 'grocks' (as we Devon people call the holidaymakers) and the horrible grock shops selling horrible grock souvenirs, and just focus on what is pretty, then Clovelly is great to visit.
(A bit painful on the old feet so do take the right footwear...which I didn't!)

Cor blimey! It's hard enough to walk to the bottom cos them there cobbles is a bit dodgy!
And as you go, you keep thinking 'Oh lordy me, I still have to walk all the way back to the top!'

I just loved the pretty cottages and gardens .

But there's no way I would want to live there!

And there's no way I would ever want a job at the bottom of the hill!

But it was worth it!

I think we'll sleep well tonight, in readiness for our 'Cornish experience' tomorrow!
Hope everyone has a lovely weekend!;-)

  1. Good evening !
ohhh what a lovely village ! I've never visited it unfortunatly ...
    C'est tellement fleuri.
Je n'aime pas non plus les magasins qui vendent des "trucs à touristes" (things for tourists) I don't understand the word "grock" but I think I understand what it means (I have to look up for this word in my BIG dictionary, lol)
The streets are "nice" for physical exercise ...
    Have a nice week-end !

  2. Hello Sal

Clovelly is a beautiful place. I love the cottages on each side as you walk down towards to harbour. They take pride in their houses and it shows. I know what you mean about horrible souvenir shops, I feel that way about Polperro. I went there on holiday a few times before it was commercialised. I returned some years later and wished tourism hadn't spoiled it. I have not returned since... I may do one day to show my daughter but it will never be as it should have stayed, an unspoilt fishing village.

  4. Maybe you could get a donkey ride back up the hill? Such a pretty spot though ~ I can't imagine trying to cope with those cobbles in winter...

    Enjoy your weekend.

  5. We went there a few summers ago - we cheated on the way back - we waited for the landrover to take us back up the top. We did what you did ignored the grockles and just enjoyed ourselves.

I love the place and that pub in the harbour does do very nice fish and chips!

  11. Clovelly looks absolutely beautiful ..... whenever I see quaint little cottages like that I start to dream of living in one but it is never likely to happen coz OH is 6' 4" and would have a perpetual lump on his head from banging into door frames and low beams !! Serves me right should have married a short bloke ;-)

  14. It's all so very picturesque like a chocloate box scene quite, quite lovely. But I quite agree I wouldn't want to have to walk up or down that hill every day!

  19. I have to confess the one time I visited Clovelly I took the coward's way out and caught the landrover to get back up to the top - mind you I did have the excuse I was 6.5 months pregnant with Nick (that makes it 14 years ago - how scary is that!?)
