Book Snippets ;-)

Going on holiday this year? No?
Well , believe me, you can! And it won't cost you that much.
You can do what I did very recently.
In fact, in truth, I've taken this holiday a few times and I never get bored with it. I love it so much that I keep returning for more, time and time again.
You see, about two weeks ago, I started my holiday in Dulwich and I journeyed to Bognor.
But I was not alone, I had company. The company of a family called Stevens.
Oh... I had such a fine fortnight! (But in July, not September!)
A simple fortnight.
Nothing untoward happened. Indeed there were no big dramas.
It reminded me of my very early childhood holidays or trips to the 'seaside'.
Do you know, my recent 'holiday' was a holiday which brought tears to my eyes.

Pure simplicity.
The author said :
'I wanted to write about simple, uncomplicated people doing normal things'
The Fortnight in September by R.C.Sherriff.

This is the past, preserved for us in the form of one of the most wonderful books that I have ever read.
There is just something about this book and I can only deduce that it must be the fact that it is so unique in its ordinariness. I love it!
Simple and uncomplicated ....(you could say tis a bit like me!)
As is...
Talking of simplicity, I won this one for a snip , having looked out for it for a while...all good things come to those who wait!

I've had books on my mind this week as it's my mum's 84th birthday on Saturday!
She loves to read and so I always look out for a variety of reading material for her.
Here's a glimpse of what she will be getting..I hope she enjoys them! I have tried to vary my choices... as she likes to vary her reading!

Finally, Newton Abbot has many charity shops but the one which I love is the one where I do believe they make a big effort when it comes to display.

It's the Oxfam bookshop in Market Walk.

They do lovely vintage displays... and change them frequently.

So...gold star to them... ''well done!!'' ;-)
These caught my eye as I passed by the shop, yesterday.

  1. I'm a great believer in "Things come to those who wait". I live by that adage and things do come to those who wait....... I love books too.

  2. Lovely, Sal. Despite being here in Edinburgh with my boys and my parents, we are all on holiday in the Lake District in our minds. Can you guess what the boys' bedtime book is at the moment?

Swallows and Amazons, of course. My mum still thinks she's Titty, I think, and Son 2 has decided he's Captain Nancy, while Son 1 is Captain John. I'm not sure where that leaves me...

  3. The book that gets me like that Sal is Anne of Green Gables - if I am not well and can't face up to doing anything other than lying on the settee - then that book is my favourite companion. I bought it at Lucy Maud Montgomerie's home on Price Edward Island, where it was written - and it conjures up that holiday for me every time.

  4. That's a fine recommendation - I'll bump it to the top of my reading pile! I've just started 'Little Boy Lost - M. Laski' which is looking like another excellent Persephone title.

  11. Hi Sal, Firstly, I must say that I think your mum looks fabulous for her age - I would never have guessed it from the anniversary picture a few posts ago - I hope she has a very happy birthday! Thank you for the R.C. Sheriff book recommendation - I think I might also enjoy 'Tout Sweet'!! Rebecca x

  12. What a lovely post. I loved your post on Dartington Hall - Ive not been there for years, but it is one of my fave places in the whole world - because of Dartington Glass, Cranks (I always did love Cranks) and the general ambience of the place - and I only ever went there in the rain - so it must be good!!!

  17. I see what you mean re the display. I'll look them up next time I'm in NA. Like Floss I'm just about to tuck into some nostalgic Arthur Ransome. Treated myself to Swallowdale at the second hand Ways With Words bookshop last week. I'm aiming to collect the set asap.
