A smile costs nothing! ;-)

This morning, I was at my mum's, 'crafting'.
We did 'quilling'... but we spent so much time talking and laughing even more ...that not a lot was achieved really!!
Somehow, the conversation got around to, 'people who do not smile' ;-)
We have a shop in town where the owner does not smile at all..my mum often spends a lot of money in this particular shop !
All of a sudden my mum said, 'Do you remember that bookmark you gave me, years ago?'
Well I didn't... and so off she went to find it!
And of course, she returned with a box full of bookmarks..loads of them!

She proceeded to tell me that now I had something to blog, seeing as our quilling efforts were somewhat 'naff'!!

So I brought them home to look through them and I fell in love with these National Trust bookmarks right away.
And various other lovely designs.

Lots of historical ones too.

And many more that I have not yet discovered!

Keep smiling!

;-)

  1. What a lovely collection, a collection that has been built up over a long period of time no doubt.
Your're right it costs nothing to smile. I used to work in a local Post Office and when the new owners took over the job was't fun anymore and one day a customer came in and I served her and the first thing she said to me was you've lost your smile - well......I thought its about time I change jobs too and I did, now I work in the local craft shop (I have worked thee about 5years and I will always remember that this same lady came into the shop and said you've found your smile again!

  2. Wow. I keep bookmarks (many from re-used birthday cards) in a basket on my bedside table, but that is a collection on a different scale!

When I was 11 we moved to a village where there was a woman who didn't smile. It really stands out in an otherwise friendly Devon village, doesn't it? I passed her every day on my walk to school and I made it my rather evil mission to 'make her smile', even though she so clearly didn't want to. After a year or so she did smile at me. I learned later that her child had died, and then I felt mega-evil for making a joke of her. However, it's possible that by smiling nicely every day I did her some good, despite my less than perfect intentions.

  3. Looks like the national collection of bookmarks, so bright and colourful!
Yes, I know what you mean about smiles. So often I get customers chatting about shops which they've enjoyed at home and away from home ... and most times, a friendly smile is a big part of what makes them feel happy to be there:)

  5. Gosh, I have a few bookmarks in a drawer but nothing on this scale - they are very pretty. I have two or three I use regularly and I have a favourite one - some I bought myself others were given me - I do like a nice bookmark:) I wish people would smile more often - fewer people say 'good morning' as they pass by than used to.

  6. Oh my, thats quite a collection, lovely. They would be very useful in our house as the Muchkin can never find a bookmark.

  7. Now I know where you get your love of collecting from, your Mum! I do wish I lived near you, I would have so much fun rifling through your family treasures! I shall try to think of the 'smile' motto with every miserable/rude customer I serve at work. I am a person who smiles, a lot! x

  8. Wow, what a beautiful collection I adore bookmarks and especially love the child like ones with lovely mesages that I have picked up from various churches.

I agree a smile costs nothing, one smiler here, I often smile at strangers walking past me in the street, and guess what. I always get a lovely smile back :)

  9. What a lovely collection of bookmarks.

I agree with you and Mary Poppins above, about smiling, I often smile at complete strangers and say hello, half smile back and half look at me as though I'm the village loony!! Still it has to start somewhere.

  10. What a collection! I used to have loads of bookmarks when I was younger as I always have been a bit of a bookworm, these days I seem to use scraps of paper more and more ...

  17. What a wonderful collection of bookmarks - the source of several prospective posts I should think. I feel sorry for people who never smile - it costs nothing and often spreads like ripples in a pond. There should be more of it.

  18. OMG that is some collection of bookmarks!!! I've had the same one for 10 years now, I made it myself & put the date on!!
I always smile... have you noticed??... thats my job but it can get you into trouble, once I smiled at a older man at work when I was working on the first floor alone. He commented that I had a lovely smile but nearly an hour later I was still trapped with, he was going on about how Exeter had changed & he voted BNP!!!! I was praying someone who save me!! Take note be careful who you smile at..lol!!! :)

  20. what a lovely collection - you've reminded me of a (much inferior) collection of bookmarks that I used to have growing up - am tempted to start again, not that we need anymore collections round here!

Smiles cost nothing do they - I do find people are more willing to smile in this glorious weather though - long may it last.
