A tale of two cities...how I love them both ;-)

Last November, I completely fell in love !
Every minute in this wonderful city was pure joy and the place had a lasting effect on me.
There is not a day goes by when I don't think about our visit; that amazing Minster ;
Shambles shopping; Jorvik treasures ; ninety nine visits to CK (LOL) ; coffee in Bettys and that pretentious waiter (it has to be said!); shivering ourselves silly at York City football club (where, coincidentally, Torquay United were playing that very weekend...how fortunate was that?)
and the wonderful, fabulous railway museum...
I purchased these... reproductions of the old British Railways posters, of which I am a huge fan.

I've also recently discovered this little series of books and was delighted to find this one at Abe Books, one of my fave places for browsing when I have the time to spare.

I loved York with a passion and I do so hope that I'll return soonish!

You know, thinking of York City's 'vintage' football ground, reminds me of this vintage book cover...

I spotted this in my dad's bookcase last week!
Vintage footy at its best!
Just look at that garb!
More hunks on this blog..this is all getting too much for me!
;-)

How those days of baggy shorts were just so wonderful, in many ways.

Which reminds me...
A massive well done to Exeter City.
Back to back promotions can't be easy !
And it does not pain me to say it..you've done Devon sooo proud!
I just hope and pray that Torquay United can make it a Double Devon Delight!
And now I am off to bed early... to dream of ....hunks in baggy shorts!!
Tomorrow, I'm off early to the booty...it's 'The Big One' at Newton Abbot Racecourse...so place your bets now as to what I'll come home with! ;-)

  1. York is fab isn't it? We're regular visitors and have been going there since we were children. Trips on the river, cafes, restaurants, bookshops, all the shops and now Twiglet has rediscovered the National Railway museum for us, it's magic.

  2. I remember well our visit to York Railway Museum in the late eighties with our boys. We all had fun enjoying looking at the railway memorabilia. Footballers like on the cover of your book look very theatrical, I think it must be the shorts! Good luck at the bootfair tomorrow. Hope you find lots of interesting things.

  3. Congratualations to Exeter City! I love York too, and your vintage pictures really do it justice. I worked there when I was last in England - a 'Hogwarts' style Victorian school just outside the walls. And someone was executed on the walls there in the book I've just finished reading - hmm...

  4. I have never been to York, it's on the list of must visit. I am still a tourist in this fair land but I have been to Exeter. 59 years ago I had my honeymoon in a little place called Chagford. Have you been there?

  8. It's been years since I went to York, lovely picture on the book... I think I prefer the 80's very tight shorts...LOL!!!
I'm very happy Exeter are promoted but the thought of Millwall fans coming to town is a bit worrying!!
Have a great time at the bootie. :)

  9. York is one of my very favourite cities, too. If I lived there I don't think I'd ever want to leave it except perhaps to nip over to the coast to Whitby or Staithes - I love Stonegate, the Shambles, the Minster and the street scenes in the Castle Museum and all the wonderful shops, of course - especially the Cat Gallery. Hope you can visit again soon! Hope I can, too:)

  12. It must be all of 25 years since we visited York and, like you, we absolutely fell in love with the place! The Minster was awe-inspiring (I also love Ely Cathedral and our own dear Exeter Cathedral most of all) and the Shambles a treasure trove of delightful little shops. You have made Himself and me want to visit again - perhaps we will leave the car in Devon and go on the train or by coach and stay in York for a few days and just enjoy the city. We actually stayed in Knaresborough when we visited York - it was a holiday house swap with a family who came and stayed in our house.
Note to Margaret: Chagford is still a pretty little Devon village with some wonderful shops. Nearby is Castle Drogo, the last 'castle' to have been built in England. It was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens for millionnaire Julius Drewe (who had made so much money from tea that he could retire, a very wealthy man, aged just 32.)
Sal, I mentioned to Himself that you supported the Gulls. He asked "What's wrong with her, is she mental?" Shall I slap him now? He's a ManU fan. I apologise for mentioning that club on your blog! I shall now wash out my mouth with soap and water.
