Bed in Summer
by Robert Louis Stevenson
In winter I get up at night
And dress by yellow candle-light.
In summer quite the other way,
I have to go to bed by day.
I have to go to bed and see
The birds still hopping on the tree,
Or hear the grown-up people's feet
Still going past me in the street.
And does it not seem hard to you,
When all the sky is clear and blue,
And I should like so much to play,
To have to go to bed by day?
I have always loved this poem since the day that our teacher wrote it on the blackboard for us to copy into our handwriting books!
As a young child, I used to have a small bedroom with a triangular window sill, upon which I would sit and watch the goings ons of the street in the evenings.
Robert Louis Stevenson's poem always reminds me of those childhood days when I should've been in bed.
Nowadays, I'm always happy to go upstairs to bed, as just over a year ago we were lucky enough to have a loft conversion. It's definitely one of the best decisions we ever made !
And was well worth all the mess!
We had to knock down a shower room (which was already situated in the hall space) in order to give us the room for the stairs...
At this point, I wanted to run away for a few weeks!)
And it's really not a good time to invite friends for coffee !
But amazingly it soon all comes together...
As did the upstairs..
And now, the Caption Competition:
Here are our fantastic builders on their last day of working here:
So what are they saying, either to each other OR to us?
(Chris is on the left, Shaun on the right)
Just leave your answers on the comments page of this post ;-)
Winner will be chosen on Saturday 24th May and will receive a fab patchwork pack...'Roses' theme!!
Have fun! Sal x
I have always been a fan of attic rooms.. my brother had the best room in the house which was a loft conversion.. It had a long window seat and I would sit and listen to James Taylor at the age of 14 and dream my dreams looking out of the window at the gardens below..
ReplyDeleteI think the builders are saying..
" Thank goodness that's finished..Let's not tell them about the hole in the roof shall we"
I love your attic nest.. It looks so cosy.

That's a gorgeous room Sal - no wonder you love it so much.
ReplyDeleteI can't thing of a caption, so won't be entering your competition - just wanted to say what a lovely room it is! Well done Shaun and Chris.

"You know she's just going to cover all this in girly things don't you?!" ;o)
ReplyDelete'All that hard work and all we get is a photo and a mention on the blog?'
ReplyDeleteChris is saying to Shaun out of the side of his mouth, "Don't lean to hard on that banister! When I give the nod, leg it before she finds something else for us to do!"
ReplyDeleteIt was well worth all the mess, your room is lovely, Fi x
'Quick lets get out before she decides she wants an extension too !'
ReplyDeleteSal, it looks absolutely gorgeous :0) Well worth all the upheaval..
Shaun is saying to Chris from behind gritted teeth
ReplyDelete"Little do they know that the picture of the room at the top of the blog has not been altered for artistic effect but it really slopes like that"
I love that poem too and have stitched parts of it on Dorothy's "reading quilt" - I used to have a lovely old hardback collection of Robert Louis Stevenson poems with beautiful illustrations and I loved it.
ReplyDeleteYour room looks amazing - but I'm no good at captions (which is a pain as a rosy patchwork pack sounds wonderful!)
Take care, lucy x

Shaun says to Chrish "Smile for the camera, then we'll get out of here before she makes us carry a tonne of books up the stairs."
ReplyDeleteIt looks gorgeous! A fabulous cosy nest under the eaves. XXX
Shaun said to Chris out of the corner of his mouth. "never mind taking another bloomin photo woman, make us a cuppa and a bacon sarnie".
ReplyDeleteThe room looks great Sal. We had our upstairs done a couple of years ago and you think will this mess ever go away. Love your quilt by the way. xxxx
Shaun:That last cup of tea tasted a bit funny
ReplyDeleteChris:I think Liz has found out you are a Plymouth fan!
"Stop snapping that camera lady - we're desperate for a cold pint at the local".
ReplyDeleteWhat a great job - looks amazing and I know you must be enjoying the extra space Sal.
My caption would be
ReplyDeleteChris: Ready Mr Scarper?
Shaun: Yes Mr Bodge-it - lets get out before she cancels the cheque
Joking apart as painful as building work invariably is - it was definitely worth it!
What a lovely room!
ReplyDeleteI bet they're saying "You do know that she going to make our pristine work "shabby" as soon as we leave don't you?"
What a lovely space you have created Sal! Not surprised you were nervous when the shower came down - it's hard to imagine you will ever have a clean house again...well worth the effort though!
ReplyDeleteCaption:
Chris: Do you think she's discovered the bag of prawns we hid under the floorboards?
Shaun: Not yet, but she'll be looking for them in a month's time ...
