‘Doing Days Out’! Day 4 - A happy, simple Sunday!

Today, we stayed local, which was probably the best thing to do! The weather was glorious!

Just five minutes away from where we live is a village called Combeinteignhead. And near the village is Hearn Field in which is, ‘The Woodshed Cafe’.

Hearn Field is a six and a half acre piece of land on the banks of the River Teign. It was named after local farmer and landowner, Percy Hearn, who, in 1983, on his death, bequeathed it, ‘For the enjoyment of the parishioners of Haccombe-with-Combe’.

We sat and watched the world go by and it was lovely to simply relax. It’s obviously very popular and there’s so much space for all to enjoy. You can find ‘The Woodshed Cafe’ here.

We left The Woodshed Cafe and Hearn Field, making  our way through the South Devon lanes, to Torquay, where we had hoped to stop and enjoy Tessier Gardens, in St Marychurch. Sadly, that was not to be as we could not park! So that’s on the back burner for another time.

We ventured on towards Totnes and then took the Newton Abbot Road, stopping at ‘The Pig and Whistle’ pub, for lunch.

I’d not been here for many years and I was pleasantly surprised. The service was good, the food was good and we came away with a very positive impression.

Making our way home, we stopped at Longcombe Nursery…(of course we did!) where I spotted something that I’ve wanted for years! A thornless Rose! ‘Zepherine Drouhin’. The fragrance is strong and the rose is beautiful. We found just the place for it and we planted in the ground and right near to our patio table.

Zepherine Drouhin is a ‘Bourbon Rose’. You might well ask what that means!

Apparently, a chance cross between Old Blush China and the Autumn Damask, led to the first of the Bourbon Roses in 1817 on the Ile de Bourbon, an island in The Indian Ocean. Later on, it was hybridised with Gallica and Damask roses. Most Bourbon roses have superb fragrance and repeat flowering.

So now you know!

And I hope that you had a very happy Sunday! πŸ˜πŸŒΌπŸŒΊπŸ“

  5. A lovely day out Sal. This brings back a lot of wonderful memories as I recognized a good many places I went to back in the day when I lived in that area. Your rose is extremely pretty and I enjoyed learning about its origins. Thank you and wishing you a happy week!
