Saturday etc

We’ve had a ton of rain last week and everything in the garden is looking all the better for it. But now we need the sun and I think we are going to get it this week! Here in South Devon, we’ve had a better May than June (so far) …and so buck up June!

In the distance, and in front of the greenhouse, you can see trellis. My other half has made new trellis, replacing  what was rotten, and he has worked so hard in putting up new posts and trellis. He’s painted the back and now all he has to do is finish painting the front. We chose
Cuprinol ‘Rosemary’.

It’s always good to see a man at work! 😁

Obviously, the trellis is crying out for a climbing rose, isn’t it?! 😁 And so, I paid a visit to David Austin Roses. Decisions, decisions! In the end, I decided on ‘Shropshire Lass’. And she arrived a few days ago…a lovely, healthy climbing rose…

With blush/ white blooms and a medium to strong, myrrh fragrance, hopefully it will settle in well! Here’s how it should look next year…

Meanwhile, I have another small task to complete. Our broken water fountain, that we bought a few years ago, has been standing in this corner of the patio looking rather sorry for itself. We filled it with water for the birds but the water just became murky and full of leaves. As we have various other bird baths and plenty of water in the garden, my other half had a sudden input of  inspiration and suggested that we plant it…

I’ve made a start with a few bits that I had but we need to go on a mission to find some plants that like shade as it is a somewhat shady area. I’ll be looking for a few trailing plants too, for interest.

It’s close to the area where we’ve planted mainly Hostas and ferns…and so it should look fine when it’s finished.

  1. 'Shropshire Lass' looks beautiful. David Austin, the son of the original Davd Austin, was interviewed for Gardeners' Question Time recently. Their roses are so lovely, strong and healthy.

  2. What a gorgeous setting! Beautiful flowers! I love to see gardens...and bird baths, fountains, feeders, etc. Birds are such a joy to have around, I love watching them and hearing them sing. Thank you so much for sharing!

  7. Your other half is making a great job of the trellis. We have a similar green on the woodwork in our garden. Shropshire Lass will be lovely next year when she has settled into her new home.
Brilliant idea to plant up the old water fountain. It will look a real treat and so much better being able to recycle it in the garden instead of going to landfill.
