Waking up to these, which greet me first thing every morning, is a delight. Osteospernum: a cheery plant for long lasting blooms, through the late spring and summer.
Meanwhile, I grew these Pink Campion, from seed, last year, and they have given a lovely wild feel to part of the garden. The bees are enjoying these right now.
The Hostas that we planted from root cuttings are doing really well in a shady spot …AND they seem to be avoiding the slugs!
Family and friends who love gardening, are all complaining about slugs chomping their plants, but we seem to be ok.
In the greenhouse, I’ve grown four Dahlias from tubers; I’ve been protecting them and checking on them regularly for any signs of chomping! My greenhouse has more snails visiting than slugs and last year they had a field day in my greenhouse!
Today, my trusty other half helped me to plant the Dahlias into large containers, outside. And just to be on the safe side, I topped them with potting grit. Would be a shame to lose them now.
This is what they should look like later in the summer:
French Can Can
Golden Emblem
Penhill Watermelon
Garden Wonder
Thirty years ago, when I left the school in which I’d been teaching, I was given this lovely planter as a leaving present. I’ve treasured it ever since and every year I try to ‘pretty it up!’ I started to plant it last week…
…and now it’s finished and it’s looking lovely! These are the plants that I bought from Plant World, which is just up the road.
This little corner, below, is where I’ve put the newly planted Dahlias. I’m also looking forward to ‘Roald Dahl’ joining us soon! There are a number of buds on this rose, now.
The two stone sinks have been splendid. You can’t really see them yet but in each container there’s a Maiden Pink, with plenty of buds coming. I love that how when one plant finishes blooming, there’s always another to step in and take over.
Today was simply glorious! Blue sky and warmth ! I spent quite some time sitting on the bench here sowing some Creeping Thyme seeds as well as some more Wild Flower seeds.
Your dahlias look promising. They'll be gorgeous in the summer. Xx
ReplyDeleteSo many good looking blooms.
ReplyDeleteI like your mix of wild and not wild flowers. Everything has its place.
ReplyDeleteSo many beautiful flowers! The Osteospernum are particularly pretty
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had a great day to work outside, so pretty. All your flowers are gorgeous. I'm curious why the grit? I've also heard that putting beer in a bottle cap or lid of a jar in the garden keeps the slugs away. I've also read that some folks use egg shells, but think that would look sorta trashy.
ReplyDeleteWell, I’ve always found that it works for me….it deters slugs and snails. It also keeps the compost moist, blocks the sunlight from reaching the compost below and stops weeds from growing. Plus it looks neat. 😁
DeleteLong may the slugs stay away from your Hostas and Dahlias.
ReplyDeleteYour pots and stone sinks are looking really pretty. Getting a range of plants to flower or have interest throughout the year can be tricky but you seem to have got things just right. Roald Dahl will be a very pretty addition when it blooms.
