And so to Coronation mugs…many are to be had!

Does anyone have any Coronation souvenir mugs? I have one from 1953 but I don’t think it’s worth anything! And it isn’t this one…

This mug, above, was designed by Eric Ravilious…and if you are lucky enough to have one then it’s worth approx £250.

It was designed in anticipation of the coronation of King Edward VIII and it was withdrawn from circulation following his abdication in December 1936. The design was recycled, revised and reformulated to celebrate the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and later, the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

Fast forward to 2023 and this year being Coronation year, there are a great variety of mugs from which to choose!

Some are very good, some less so! There are certainly an interesting mix of designs on offer and of course, it’s far more than just mugs! When a royal event occurs, with it comes a massive industry and a chance for crafters, potters and makers of all sorts to home their skills and get creating, designing, and making. Many people argue that all of these souvenirs are simply ‘cheap tat’ but what has to be remembered is that an event like this gives many people jobs so that they can earn a living.

I did a quick recce, with mugs in mind, and here are just a few of what is on offer:

                                             Cath Kidston…

Wedgwood

                                                          Not on the High Street…

                                                        Emma Bridgewater…

Sophie Allport….

                                                                               Spode

                                                              Highgrove

   Wrendale

And a whole lot more!

I wonder… have you found any that you particularly like?

And if so, which is your favourite?
