My Dad , 1926 - 2013

God looked around his garden
And found an empty place,
He then looked down upon the earth
And saw your tired face.

He put his arms around you
And lifted you to rest.
God's garden must be beautiful
He always takes the best.

He knew that you were suffering
He knew you were in pain.
He knew that you would never
Get well on earth again.

He saw the road was getting rough
And the hills were hard to climb.
So he closed your weary eyelids
And whispered, 'Peace be Thine'.

It broke our hearts to lose you
But you didn't go alone,
For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.

I cannot begin to describe my ride on this week's roller coaster of emotions.

A new grandchild on Tuesday.

And then, less than 48 hours later,

my dad passes away.

He was so poorly and he is now, surely, in a better place.

Rest in peace, dad.

  1. Dear Sally. I am so sorry your Dad passed away this week but I hope that he is now at peace will give you so much comfort. The " Circle Of Life" is rotating with you right now and amidst much sadness joy is born. My Grandma always used to say " as one door closes another opens!" I hope your new Grandson will bring you comfort and joy in the coming weeks.

  3. My thoughts are with you, Sal.
As Linda writes above, just before my dad passed away, my parents' neighbour had a baby in the same hospital as he was and was determined that my dad would meet the little one. Life is weird like that, isn't it?
Enjoy your the new memories that you will create with your new grandson and relish the ones of your father.

  5. So sorry for the loss of your darling Dad Sal. When my Dad died, Twiglet arrived a few years later, and my Mum said he switched her light back on. Look at your lovely grandchildren and remember your Dad with lots of love

  13. Beautiful words Miss Sal, they say it all and right from the heart.
Look back at wonderful memories collected over a whole life to help the pain.
Strength will be there for you from Terry lean hard on him and enjoy the new life that has begun with Toby.

  14. Thank you to each and everyone of you for your kind comments.

I am sure that Sal will take great comfort from them.

In these times of sadness, let us recognise that we share our lives in this wonderful world with so many many wonderful human beings.

Together we can overcome all, especially at times when life seems hard to bear.

    THANK YOU ALL

  16. Dear Sally
I am so so sorry to hear your sad news and all thoughts are with you at this difficult time. You won't know me but I came to your blog via your Newton Abbot page being where I lived for my formative years. I hope things will soon look better and appreciate the time enjoyed rather than the bitter pain of loss.

  17. You don't know me but I found your blog a while ago and love your home area so much after many family holidays staying at Dunchideock and often visiting Newton Abbot to shop. So many happy memories! Madge Mellors, the indoor market, ...Anyway, I digress. Sympathy on your sad loss. We printed that beautiful poem on the back of the funeral order of service for my Mum and it still brings a tear to my eye. My thoughts are with you - so much emotion for you at the moment - such a huge loss and yet the joy of a new grandchild. He will make you smile when it feels like you won't again and you will all draw comfort from each other.
