The place of the clear stream !

Living five minutes away from a main line railway station in Devon, certainly has its advantages!
More often than not, the train is our choice of travel on a Saturday and yesterday we decided to go east!
***
Generally, if you want to travel to London from the South West, you can get to London Paddington, pretty quickly, on a First Great Western train.
But if you have more time to spare, you can opt to travel via South West Trains.
This is the service which takes you, eventually, to London Waterloo.
After Exeter, this route takes in such places as Whimple, Honiton, Axminster, Crewkerne, Yeovil Junction...etc
The journey is charming , peaceful and you'll find it easy on the eye.
The River Axe meanders near the railway line for some of the journey... it's a very pretty sight.
***
Only a few minutes after Yeovil Junction, it is time to alight.
You'll find yourself here:

Sherborne...in Dorset.
Sherborne is one of those beautiful small towns, which was, once upon a time, the capital of Wessex.

It has some lovely, honey coloured buildings.
It has history.
The Saxons named Sherborne 'Scir Burne' - the place of the clear stream - and made it the capital of Wessex.
Two of King Alfred's elder brothers, King Ethelbert and King Ethelbald are buried within the impressive Abbey.

The town is full of historic interest, with 17th, 18th and 19th century architecture .

And one of the best bits...it has mainly 'non clone' shops!
As you well know, I am not a lover of clone towns.
There are many independent shops here!

We enjoyed our trip to Dorset...one of my favourite counties, after Devon, of course!
Meanwhile, I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend!

;-)

  21. You should work for the tourist board! Or better still, open up a retreat bed and breakfast where we could come and stay, craft and visit all these lovely places you show us! Book me in for a stay!
    Take care
