.....with my little eye!

Oh how I loved these books!
To jump over the fence and into the woods, armed with either 'I spy Trees', 'I spy Birds' or 'I spy Wild Flowers' etc etc...was such fun!

My Grandma used to walk me all around the Devon lanes, at a place called Kingskerswell.
She taught me many names of wild flowers ...in the days when you saw a lot more variety in the hedgerow!

I remember having the I spy badge and joining the I spy tribe...and looking up to 'Big Chief I Spy'!

My books were in the 'News Chronicle' series.

Yes, I loved these books!
And so... I have decided to collect them once more.
Every child should have them, don't you think ?!

Finally,I have discovered this fab little site:
and here is the I Spy link:

  1. Those books were such fun. We even got our boys some of the new ones and Son 1 had an amazing holiday in the South West doing 'I spy Geology'.

  2. I wish they would publish those books now they are so interesting. I remember going on nature walks in my junior school albeit walking round the edge of the school playing-field looking and learning about the flora and fauna.
I wish I could meet someone like you who is like minded with nature and books!

  4. Hi, Will see what I can find! Will you be sending off to 'Big Chief I-Spy for a feather when you complete each one? .... even if he is in a different time-space continuum ... as they say on Star Trek!!

  6. I loved them too Sal and spent many happy hours discovering and ticking them off. They didn't half help your general knowledge - and over the years have answered many a crossword clue! Were you an ovalteeny too?

  10. They still make those you know! When my kids were smaller, I used to keep some in my handbag, it was always a brilliant way to distract a tired or grumpy little person.

  14. My parents sold those books in our shop in the 1950s! I only had one of them, the one on Musical Instruments and I put it into my Music Appreciation Scrapbook - we all have to make them for our music lessons at Torquay Girls' Grammar School - and it was the only time I won a school prize (a book, of course!)

  18. I loved these book when I was growing up. First my big brother had lots of them. When I was older enough to read he started to by them for me. I learnt about wildflowers, butterflies, trees and many more things from them.
A lovely memory of innocent times.

  19. I vaguely remember I-Spy. These books appeal to me as an adult. I would not have appreciated the lovely artwork as a child. They certainly would make a great collection. x
