Pretty things

I do so love pretty things!
How apt is this piece of vintage embroidery for the month of May?
I won this tablecloth on ebay and I think it is charming.
Talking of pretty things, I never thought this would happen !
Remember my one pair of Laura Ashley curtains which I bought from Amanda a couple of years ago...(and then I made them into two pairs for my bedroom)?
Well, I've been looking for ages for another pair for my hall and landing...and had almost given up hope.

Well... there we are in Ashburton looking for a bathroom cupboard and mirror,when..there they were, hanging up high in Sara's Lavender box. One pair, quite wide too!! (Snip snip!)
So yesterday, I altered them ..into two pairs..job done!
I also finished these bags before spending the rest of the day in the bathroom...painting..painting..and painting....three times around the tongue and groove boarding. How I ache today!
All will be revealed later in the week but it is just about finished ..apart from the woman's touch of a few fripperies here and there, naturally!
After that I slumped into a chair and was only really fit enough to pick up this lovely mag..
and read about how people transform their homes on a BUDGET!
The trouble is that their budget and mine don't usually agree!!

But it's a lovely mag with oodles of inspiration

Hope you all have a merry Monday!

(And I won't be taking the scissors to this, I can well assure you!)

  2. That's a gorgeous table cloth, very nice! And the curtains look beautiful.

I agree with you on the budget thing. I read my Mum's 25 Beautiful Homes after she has it and for the people in there (after they've bought the seven bed mansion as four bedroom were not enough for one couple plus one child!) a budget means having a standard fitted kitchen versus a handcrafted bespoke one!

  4. I agree with you about renovating a home on a budget! Really, it's quite funny. They want to try doing it all on my budget. You have shown my favourite house in this months's copy though.Looking forward to seeing your bathroom. Our bathroom suite has been ordered and kitchen plans are on the way. I'm not sure whether to be scared or excited. Have a good week.

  5. Lovely cloth Sal ... I have always found myself drawn to these hand embroidered pretties and think of who must have sat for hours to make them ... I rescued one myself at the weekend which is similar but has baskets of flowers in the corners instead of the crinoline lady ... only a pound and like you I won't be using the scissors as it is still in such lovely condition. Keep up the handmade rescue ... x

  6. What a bee-uti-ful cloth! Now, Sal, you're not going to cut that one up, are you? Only joking!
As for these so-called 'budgets' ... they either make me scream with laughter or weep! Some bespoke kitchens are a bit like expensive cars ... if you have to ask the price, you can't afford 'em! Hence ours is certainly not bespoke, just original 1985 kitchen and solid oak.
What pretty curtains and what a find!

  8. Pretty things indeed! There are budgets and there are budgets - ours at the moment is pay the bills buy food and manage without everything else - still it's nice to sit and dream that one day..... :) That doesn't cost a penny:)

  9. Good things come to those who wait, or so the saying goes. At least it proved to be true for you! Your new curtains look lovely. I think you have tempted me to add the ‘Period Living’ magazine to my shopping list – it does look lovely. I hope you have a wonderful day :)

You get lovely ideas from those magazines but oh how I wish I had the pennies. I have been staying with friends this week-end their house makes mine look like Steptoes Yard! Love the curtains too. Things do come to those who wait!

  16. My one weakness ... as Dorcas Lane (Lark Rise) would've said ... is Period Living, followed by Period House, Country Homes & Interiors, Traditional Homes & Interiors, BBC Homes & Antiques, Antiquexplorer (west country free publication), Period Ideas, Ancestors, Heritage, The English House ...
I'm a magazine junkie and yes, I do buy these each and every month. And I seldom throw any away. They are a delight and also a logistical nightmare!

PS I have been known to buy the occasional book, too!

  17. Couldn't agree more. I bought that mag a few days ago and words were said as I read the bit on economy. Never mind we like minded souls are the real 'economists' without doubt:)

  19. Oh my that's one pretty cloth! We were taught Maypole dancing at school and I remember the teacher desperately screeching 'Under Under! No over under, around around! oh no not that way, back back, under... HAHA! Sometimes we managed to weave the right pattern. More often we landed in a giggling heap of tangled ribbons! Happy memories! Great find! t.x

  20. Now there's providence for you Sal.. right time right place!
If that is a sneak preview of your bathroom.. I can see it is going to be beautiful..
That reminds me... My mother had almost a complete set of Cornishware in our cottage in Cornwall in the 60's... I wonder where it is now!?

  22. Oh Sal the tablecloth is so sweet! I love it!
I like the mags too. I have always loved blue and white cornishware (reminds me of my nan). I haven't got a single piece though, must try and find one or two bits of it someday.
    Sweet post :o)

  24. What a lovely find. The embroidery design is simply wonderful for May. They just do not make those pretty patterns anymore. I think I have seen a website on vintage embroidery patterns. I may need to just take a plunge and buy a one.
P.S. Good to hear no scissors on this one. : )

  25. Beautiful curtains. I couldn't decide between between Period Living or Country Living when I was shopping yesterday. In the end I bought Country Living lol!
