Splish Splash! (I saw something nasty in the woodshed!)

Emotional scenes took place here, yesterday, as we said goodbye to an old friend.
She, who has spent the past eight years breathing down our necks, every time we have taken a
bath...and probably seen far more than she ought!! Ha ha!! LOL!
I nicknamed her 'Athena'.

Now you might possibly think that this bathroom is ok..and I suppose it was 'passable'.
Indeed, when we viewed the property, the Estate Agent's details did state...'A luxurious bathroom'.

At a distance it did look just that...but just not our taste!

And so on Monday, it was goodbye to her..and to this less than delightful scene.

And here we go..one bathroom renovation underway!
OMG what have we done!

Upon ripping all of this out, our wonderful builder discovered a small pot, behind the vanity unit.

Opening it, we discovered a 19p stamp, a new penny and a note, which read:

'This bathroom conversion (from the coal and woodshed) was constructed in May 1990 for Mr and Mrs E.F. Saunders.'

(Of course, Dear Mr Snippets, ever the clown, wanted to put his own note in the pot stating:

This bathroom conversion, constructed in 1990,was so **** that we ripped it out!)

LOL..Nuff said!

Now this is where the real fun begins and I know that it's going to look wonderful when it is finished! Which won't be long!

So what exactly are we doing?

Well, you'll just have to wait and see but it does involve tongue and groove, Farrow and Ball and some fabulous fabric called Delphiniums by Philip Jacobs, for my curtains...although maybe not in the colour that you think!!

All will be revealed!

;-)

Meanwhile...Happy Bathtimes..and just watch out who is breathing down your neck! ;-)

  1. ha ha Mr Snippets a card isn't he??? Did you hear about Stephen Hawkins on the news... :( ??!!!
The bathroom would not be to my taste but you get use to living with things like that. The new one sounds lovely, can't wait to see the finish results. How long will it take? Living without a bathroom would not be fun!! :) x

  2. I'll look forward to seeing what you do...although I must admit I hope Mr and Mrs Saunders weren't reading this post!

  3. Farewell, Athena! We are currently living with a less that tasteful downstairs bathroom, as you've had to do - we've done what we could (changed the orange walls for white, which improved the burgundy pin-striped tiles about as much as possible). We have an upstairs bathroom which we installed, so I just try not to think too much about the downstairs one until we too have time and money to make some real changes. I'll be looking to yours for inspiration, however!

  4. Hi Sal, Mr Snippets has set me wondering what may be written if I were to find a similar note behind the work in my bathroom. My fixtures are Peach. ( Of course, it sounds much more "Country Living" when I describe as "Corset Pink".)SueX

  5. Isn't it wonderful to come across stuff like that in houses? I love the secrets they keep. You surely must put a message back in the pot....Yes? x

  6. We always put a message behind any wallpaper that we put up, giving the date the old paper was stipped off and the new paper applied. And when we built a wall in our garden a few years ago we put a time capsule into it, with the names and dates of birth of all those living here are the time, and some photos, and a coin or two ... I think some other things went into it but I can no longer remember what!

PS Lovely to see the back of that bathroom, though. So neat and clean and absolutely vile, eh? We have two small bathrooms. One is a downstairs shower room, the other an upstairs bathroom. They have perfectly good 'champagne' coloured suites that we're reluctant to rip out (i.e. they don't look bad enough to get rid of although any sane person would much prefer pure white) but eventually we hope to decorate the shower room. I love the sound of the Delphinium fabric - my mother once had some gorgeous fabric with which she made curtains. It had a white background, and on it there looked to be huge dark blue and purple tulips! That makes the material sound grotesque but it was very elegant.

  11. Sal that is so funny, my sister had her bathroom decorated about 10years ago and had these tiles put in. She asked my then 13 year old nephew what he thought, he looked at the lady on the tiles, thought for a minute and said, MINGING!!!

  13. Hi, Wishing you all the best with your major works in the bathroom department. When I read that it was converted partly from the woodshed and also your comments on it I felt it was a safe bet to remind you of that phrase from Cold Comfort farm (I think?)... "There's something nasty in the woodshed."
Can't recall who said it though.
Anyway, I'm surte that there will soon be something quite beautiful in your woodshed!
    X:)

  14. I love stories like this Sal... to find a pot of treasure.. however modest, is always a thrill!
Your new bathroom will be a thing of splendour and I can foresee a turnstile on the door for visitors!

Good luck with your exciting conversion...Hope things aren't too dusty, as I imagine taking a bath is a problem just now! ;-))
I love the sound of the painted T&G and fabric that you plan to use(and no lady looking over your shoulder!)
Good luck - look forward to seeing the finished room,

  19. You did make me laugh this morning:) Brings back memories of when we first moved to our present house - the bathroom was still tiled in bright pink patterned tiles from the 1970s -when the house was built - we lived with them for about 4 years before we were able to refurbish the bathroom!

  20. That made me laugh. We are just nearing the end of our bathroom reno. oh joy!

  21. You should definitely add a note & hide it again for the next person to find!

We had a fountain of fuschias on the tiles in our bathroom when we moved in but they are long gone now.

  22. Love the new bathroom hated the old and can see why you would have changed it! We are currently on our 3rd and final bathroom, all different, one completely tiled, one painted but ultra modern and now the last shabby chic with a free standing foot bath...I searched lemon bathrooms and yours came up...Love it!
