Down in the woods today!

It's very very wet here in Sunny Devon!
But 6 tons of gravel will not get up and shift itself, will it?!!
Let me explain!
Down at the bottom of our garden, beyond the seats (in the top photo), is a wild, shady, wooded area...
Some people might think that it is a gloomy place but I love it.
The birds sing above us and it's our very own 'walk in the woods'.

Having said that, we'd let it become rather overgrown, too overgrown in fact. So last year we cleared it and put down some of that special matting with a view to this year covering it with either woodchip or chippings.

At one end is an old chicken coop.
It's falling to bits, not that safe underfoot and no longer used for chickens! But it adds to the character of the garden!
As I type, my 'boys' are still working hard, shovelling and spreading.
I'll go back later, to snap the end product!

Meanwhile, talking of character in the garden,I just had to show you this...undressed in January...

Dressed in May...

Isn't nature wonderful?!

  7. Ooh how fantastic! Are you in The Yellow Book? (It is yellow isn't it?) Do you take part in the 'open gardens' thingie? That would be one more fab place to visit later in the summer. I've NEVER 'done' Berry Head, Brixham much to my sister's amazement, nor 'letterboxing' on Dartmoor, nor Salcombe. These have all been pencilled in for the school hols. Ashburton looks like another goodie. :0)

  8. I don't think my garden is anywhere near the standard required for the yellow book!!;-)LOL
Mind you, cream teas on the lawn does sound terribly English.Shame it is not flat enough to play croquet! ;-)

  9. Now that's what I call a living shed! Your garden looks fantastic with a lovely shady spot. Every garden needs one, as however much we love the sun, we all need a bit of respite every now and again. Yesterday was a horrible day here in West Sussex. I only managed to get my bean poles up before the rain set in for the day. A little later on I realised that whilst outside for that short time, I had been bitten to death by a mosquito. Can't say I was too pleased! Anyway today the sun is shining, so hopefully I can get back on track with my plans. Enjoy your garden Sal. x

  11. What a beautiful spot! I feel more peaceful just from the pictures. And the lovely shade...we get plenty of sun here, which is a blessing, but the shade is prized for its coolness. Love to hang a hammock and loll around a bit there.

  12. Sal - the Teddy Bears would enjoy a picnic in that spot in the woods!! Wow it all looks so green - just lovely. How many acres is your property - it looks quite large? What type of vine is that on the shed please? What a magnificent specimen.

Hope the boys have done a great job and have no ill effects from all that shovelling and spreading!

Sunny and perfect here today after rain much of yesterday - such a nice Spring so far.

  15. I couldn't agree more.. May is the most exciting month in the garden and so much is emerging each day.
Your garden has lots of interesting nooks and crannies and the wooded area has a charm all of it's own.

    Love
