The best thing we’ve ever done in the garden is build a wildlife...

Standing by the old and woody heather bed, last year, we discussed
what we should do.What had given us pleasure for 18 years, was
now looking tatty and past its sell by date. Decisions! Decisions!

We’d often discussed whether we should have a garden pond; it was
just a case of choosing the right spot.

This particular spot seemed ideal and so...we took the plunge! I say
‘we’ but in all honesty, my role in all of this in the early days has
been ‘tea lady‘ and researcher of pond plants! The heavy work, the
hard grafting, the back breaking, physical effort, was all down to
               my other half!

Fast forward to around 8th May this year and the pond construction
was complete. We were a couple of weeks into lockdown. And thus
began the fun part of ordering plants...and then ordering more!

A kind neighbour passed us two toads over the garden fence, from his
garden, and the pond was now taking shape!

It’s only been two months and we have had a wealth of wildlife
visiting! One,late,June afternoon,I glanced across to the pond, just
in time to see a barred grass snake taking a swim! Quite a sight!
I raced to get a) my other half and b) the camera!

Our pond, in two months, has become a place for birds to visit and
               drink; for many insects to frequent; for hedgehogs to visit at night;
for a lovely variety of pond plants to put down their roots or float to
their hearts’ content. No doubt far more goes on when we are not
present! And only a few days ago, as we were sitting with our coffee,
a Firecrest flew down ..the tiniest bird that I’ve ever seen!

Was it the right decision? You bet!

Every day brings a delight of some sort. Every day is different.
Every day is pure magic. Every day, we meet there..elevenses, lunch
afternoon drinks time and even early evening...we can’t get enough
               of it!

I just wish we’d done this years ago!

And so..if you are thinking of building a garden pond...don’t waste time
contemplating! Just do it! You won’t be disappointed! Truly!

July delights!

Quite often, it is the simple things that please as well as mystify.

For instance, firstly, there’s Common Fleabane.
This beautiful splash of yellow makes its entrance, every year, in a dry
and sheltered spot in our garden.
Yet...it is said to ‘prefer marshland, water meadows, damp hollows...’
You get the gist!
But,’ there's always one‘ , as they say!

The Common Poppy really needs no introduction!
Although classed as a wild flower, it fits perfectly well
in our garden, where the splendid splashes of red instantly give a
lovely spectacle. And oh boy, do their tissue paper petals look
good when partnered with Cornflowers!

Perennial Sweet Peas are another welcome sight and in
particular, this variety, ‘ Red Pearl’.
What it lacks in scent, it makes up for in its stunning blooms.
Just chop it back when it has finished flowering and it will
reward you year after year.

Three lovely flowers, at their best and each doing
their own ‘thing’ during the month of July.

A place to....

                                                                A place to sit....

To contemplate...

     To pause....

To wish there was a space!

    Ah! That’s better.....

   To observe...

To watch and wait...

To rest...

To hide...!
